OVERVIEW
Join us for an unforgettable ride from the snow-capped mountains of Jotunheimen and Utladalen to the breathtaking Fjords on our brand new OffRoader Norway trip.
Linking the historic routes of Mjølkevegen (the Milk Road), Konigvegen (the King’s Road) and the Rallarvegen (the Navvies Road), this is some of the smoothest and most spectacular gravel we’ve ever ridden.
For those that like more technical gravel there’s plenty to enjoy on this route, including flowing singletrack, challenging gravel climbs and descents and some optional pump tracks!
Photos and videos don’t do justice to the raw beauty of the snowy peaks, glistening glaciers, glassy lakes or the lush and verdant valleys. This ride is best experienced in person and one you’ll be talking about for years to come.

RIDE HIGHLIGHTS
Norwegian Gravel
The epic, smooth Norwegian gravel, coupled with some fun, flowing single track and spectacular descents.
Breathaking scenery
Breathtaking scenery from the snow capped mountains, through the verdant valleys all the way to the magnificent fjords. You'll soak up the scenery from a different perspective, whilst taking a relaxing boat ride across Lake Bygdin.
Remote Wilderness
Enjoy being in this remote wilderness, whilst having the comfort of being supported by our Glorious Gravel crew.
Rallarvegen
We save the best for last, riding the Rallarvegen route to Flåm on the final stage is the absolute highlight of this trip and a bucket list must.
KNOW BEFORE YOU GO
Accommodation
We’ll stay in a mixture of typical Norwegian mountain lodges and regular hotels each night. You can choose between a private single room, shared twin (2 beds) or shared double (these may also be twin beds with separate duvets) room. All of our hotels are hand picked and we stay in some really special places, in the remote countryside, finishing right by the fjords in Flåm.
Bike & Tyre Choice
This route is what gravel bikes were made for. Suspension isn’t needed but you could also choose to ride a hardtail and keep up, although some of the climbs will be tougher. The climbs are generally steady, although there will be cumulative fatigue from the amount of climbing each day. A 1:1 gear ratio is advisable. Tyre choice: 35mm as a minimum. 38 to 42mm is ideal and you might want to consider 45mm plus for maximum comfort. It’s not that the tracks are rough, only that you’ll carry more speed on the fast sections with more rubber in contact with the road. An all rounder gravel tyre will be ideal.
Food
Breakfasts are standard buffets at the hotels (always with a few interesting options to start your day!), lunches are in local cafes, evening meals are a mixture of set menus or buffets in the hotels, with options to cater for specific dietary requirements.
weather
We time all our Off:Roaders to catch each destination in its prime and there is a short summer weather window for this region. Expect the weather and temperatures to be very mixed, as our route takes us up into the mountains (our highest point is over 1,300m). With highs of around 15°C and temperatures dipping below 8°C in places, warm layers are essential.
Terrain
Norway is home to some incredible gravel riding. With mile after mile of smooth, fast flowing, hard packed gravel. The route also incorporates chunkier gravel sections and some single track. The long descent on the Rallarvegen on stage 4 starts with a steep, technical section of 21 switchbacks. Prior gravel riding experience and confidence in your technical skills are essential for this trip. The riding is most like gravel in Scotland or Kielder, just on a bigger scale and with more epic scenery!
The Route
This is a challenging route with plenty of climbing each day and over 80% off road riding overall. The gravel is top grade, smooth and fast rolling, and features some more technical sections each day (some of which are optional). We pass through some very remote areas, so a good level of experience and confidence in riding off road is essential to complete the route.
7 UNMISSABLE HIGHLIGHTS IN NORWAY
NUMBER One
Pure Escapism away from everyone
Possibly more than any of our other rides around the world, our ride in Norway takes us info remote back-country away from roads, villages & people.
On most days we just have ourselves (and other hikers / riders on these glorious routes) for company, often with many miles between buildings! Hours and hours of stunning, uninterrupted riding in as natural a setting as you could get.
NUMBER TWO
Beautiful views from Lake Bygdin
Stage one is broken into two sections with a 63km section to Lake Bygdin, then a stunning crossing of the lake & finishing with a 24km roll to the finish.
Lake Bygdin is 25km long and gives us some amazing views of the surrounding mountains and a welcome rest after the first section in the hills.
number three
Ride by Glaciers in the Norweigen mountains
The views on most days (but even more so on the first and last days) are absolutely jaw-dropping.
The route goes through thick forest, past high mountains, huge waterfalls, picturesque lakes & alongside glaciers. There are few places in the world that can compete against Norway for incredible scenery.
Number Four
Peaceful nights under the stars
Other than our finish in Flam, we stay in tiny towns and villages in remote parts of Norway so evenings are enjoyed living the slow life and enjoying the countryside around us.
When we were last there, we were rewarded with seeing the Northern Lights one night and on a clear night, the stars were glorious with almost no light pollution.
Number five
Ride the legendary Rallarvegen
Stage four is 107km mostly on one of the great gravel routes on the planet.
The Rallarvagen was built well over 100 years ago as a support road while a railway was constructed and has been lovingly restored to it's full glory today. The route rolls past amazing scenery throughout and is without doubt one of the best single day rides in the world.
Number six
Finish the ride with a dip in the Fjords
Our tour ends in Flam with the final 40km being mostly downhill finishing with an amazing view of the Fjords.
Flam is a popular spot for tourists around the world enjoying Norway's famous fjords and is a great place for a finishers party. There is also a floating sauna with the option to jump straight into the chilly fjord and then quickly back in the sauna! A stunning finish to a great ride.
Number seven
Three days riding the glorious Mjølkevegen
Our first three days are mostly on the Mjolkevegen - the old milk road connecting small villages and high mountain pastures of the region.
The gravel here is super smooth and the secenry is beautifully varied - day one is full of spectacular views and the other days are more relaxed riding through foothills, mountain farmlands and remove villages.
STAGE DETAILS
Route Summary:
We start as we mean to go on, riding on the finest Norwegian gravel – some of the smoothest we’ve ever ridden – heading to the highest mountains of Norway. Prepare yourself for breathtaking views across lakes, rivers and mountains as we ride into the wild and remote landscape.
After lunch, sit back for a couple of hours and enjoy a leisurely boat trip across beautiful Lake Bygdin as we travel further into the wilderness. The historical ferry boat connects two stretches of the Mjølkevegen (Milk Road), which was used in former times to connect the high mountain farms to the valleys in order to transport milk. Cattle still graze and roam freely on the high pastures.
On the other side of the lake, more fast flowing, smooth gravel and stunning scenery awaits. Our route passes higher snow-capped mountains, close to Lake Tyin, with distant views of the Falketind Glacier. We finish our day with a flowing road descent down to our hotel in Tyinkrysset.
Ride Distance: 87km Ride Elevation: 1353m % Off Road: 80% Difficulty: 4/5 Technical Difficulty: 2/5
Route Summary:
Today we begin with a short section on the famous Kongevegen (King’s Road) and head for more traditional Norwegian mountain farm landscapes. Steeped in history, the King’s Road was the first road between Eastern Norway (Oslo) and Western Norway (Bergen). Today, it is one of the finest historical road monuments in Europe and is actively used by walkers from all over the world.
After some single track through the forests, we then head back onto the Milk Road along the northern shore of lake Vangsmjøse. We are treated to mile after mile of smooth gravel along the valley floor between towering mountain ranges on either side.
Climbing legs at the ready as this is our Queen Stage. One of the ascents takes us onto the beautiful Stolsvidda mountain plateau past local farms with grazing livestock. Our final climb takes us up to our finish at the family run Gomobu Mountain Lodge in the ski resort of Vaset.
Ride Distance: 88km Ride Elevation: 1840m % Off Road: 82% Difficulty: 4/5 Technical Difficulty: 3.5/5
Route Summary:
Mountains meet valleys today and the terrain is a mix of silky smooth gravel, chunky gravel and some fun single track.
We start the day surrounded by the wide-open spaces of the mountain plateau from Gomobu, riding on smooth gravel with mountains looming in the distance. We have around 10km of rolling uphill to warm up before a short descent. Here the landscape begins to change as you head away from the mountain plateau and back into the forests, with more natural style gravel tracks on this section of the Milk Road.
We cross the Tisleidammen before climbing up to another ski resort. A short section of twisty single track is followed by a fun descent on a mix of wide smooth gravel roads and tarmac with nice flowy turns, down into the valley at Gol. Expect spectacular scenery along the valley, beside rivers, through forests and past towering cliffs, and great views into Hallingdal valley.
Save something in your legs for the end of today as our route climbs back up the side of the valley to our ski centre resort hotel at Geilo.
Ride Distance: 107km Ride Elevation: 1491m % Off Road: 88% Difficulty: 3/5 Technical Difficulty: 3/5
Route Summary:
By far the most epic day we’ve ever had on a gravel bike! Get ready for the King Stage of our trip, which takes us over the famous Hardangervidda Mountain Plateau all the way down to the Fjords.
Today’s scenery is simply unreal – mountains, lakes, waterfalls, snow capped peaks and glaciers – the photo opportunities are endless. We start with a mix of gravel and road to climb up to Haugastøl. From here we join the Rallarvegen, following the footsteps of construction workers that built the Bergensbanen railway, which connects Norway’s two biggest cities, Oslo and Bergen, in the early 1900s.
This remote gravel route passes Norway’s highest railway station at Finse (1,222 metres) from where you get views of Hardangerjøkulen Glacier (for any Star Wars fans, Ice Planet Hoth was filmed here).
The day ends with a spectacular 18km downhill, through the beautiful valley of Flåmsdalen to the fjords. The upper section includes 21 sharp switchbacks at Myrdal, where caution, skill and concentration are required in equal measure. There is a zip line alternative if you don’t like the look of this section of descent. Whichever option you choose, take your time to soak in the views all the way to our finish in Flåm, nestled alongside the shores of glassy Aurlandsfjord.

FAQs
Although the daily distances for this ride may seem lighter than some of our other international and UK rides, this route is demanding so we have given it an overall rating of 4 out of 5. This means that a good level of fitness is required, especially for the longer, steady gravel climbs, and back to back days of climbing. The terrain itself is not especially technical compared to many of our UK rides, however there are a number of single track sections and technical descents where previous gravel riding experience is essential for your safety.
The arrival airport is Oslo Gardermoen airport (OSL), and departure airport is Bergen (BGO) . There are regular flights operated by Norwegian Air from London Gatwick, Manchester and Edinburgh, by Ryanair from London Stansted, by British Airways from London Heathrow, just to name a few.
On arrival, the transfer from Oslo airport to the first hotel, will be at 2.00pm, and will take approximately 3 hours.
On departure, the return transfer to Bergen airport will depart at 7.00am and take approximately 2.5 hours, in time for flights after 12.00pm.
Note: transfer times are subject to change should flight times change. Final times will be confirmed and sent to you a month before your trip.
The weather is very mixed in this part of Norway in Summer. This is the end of their summer and the best time of year to ride in this region, however our route takes us up into the mountains (our highest point is over 1,300m) so expect a mix of temperatures and weather. Temperatures will likely range from 8-15°C. Warmer layers, such as long sleeve jerseys, arm warmers, gilets, knee/leg warmers and gloves plus a waterproof jacket are advisable, especially for the descents.
British citizens do not require a visa to enter Norway.
Travel insurance is compulsory for our trips, and you are required to provide us with your policy information before departing.
Your insurance should include adequate cover for cycling abroad, any emergency medical treatment, evacuation/repatriation, your baggage and your bike. We also recommend it includes cancellation insurance, should you be unable to join the trip for specific reasons such as illness.
