A suitably epic gravel ride for the longest Saturday of the year. Ride from the base of Leith Hill down to the coast and back through the South Downs & Surrey Hills. Taking in some of the best gravel in the South East, this is a classic summer off road challenge.
Distance: 143km | Elevation: 1631m
Ride Difficulty 4.5/5
Technical Difficulty 2.5/5
Percentage of Route Off Road 75%
Bike & Tyre Choice: A lot of the route is one fast gravel tracks, old railway lines or quiet backroads. Due to the distance of the ride, a gravel bike is preferred though like in most gravel sportives, there will be sections (some sand in the Surrey Hills, potentially rutty parts of the South Downs Way) where a mountain bike would be more suitable. We would suggest a gravel bike with 40mm tyres for this ride.
Countdown to June 19th
– Ride parts of the Downs Link to the South Coast
– Feed stop on Lancing Beach
– Classic gravel sections in the South Downs & Surrey Hills
– Social drink at the finish village
Wotton: 143km, 1631m
Our longest gravel sportive of the season. The ride starts with an off road ascent of Leith Hill before joining up with the Downs Link for a the quickest part of the ride – a 40km straight shot down to the coast. From here we head along the coast to Lancing Beach and head back up to the South Downs Way over the longest climb of the day (7.5km). After a roll through the South Downs, we head back on the Downs Link before a final flourish through the Surrey Hills.
Physical Difficulty: 4.5/5
What type of bike should I ride?
This route is ideal for gravel bikes with wide (40mm plus) tyres. A mountain bike would be fine on the South Downs but slow on the Downs Link and back lanes. Road bikes are not suitable for this ride. We have carbon gravel bikes from Pearson available to hire for the day. E bikes are not allowed on this ride.
How do I find out my start time?
Riders start in groups of maximum 6 at a time. We will send you an email after you have booked to choose your start time between 8am and 10am, if you are riding with a friend you can choose to start with them.
Where is the start / finish?
The ride starts and finishes next to Leith Hill in Wotton. There is free parking onsite as well as toilets & refreshments.
What happens if I have a mechanical / accident?
We have first aiders & mechanics at all the feed stops and ride captains along the route to support.
What shall I pack with me for the ride?
You need to have a water bottle, basic kit to repair punctures, inner tubes & riding with a helmet is compulsory. Our feed stops have water, coke, cake, fruit & the best tasting sports nutrition bars & nut butters from Outdoor Provisions.
When will I get my GPX file
Our local team do a final recon ride 1 week before the event and can make final tweeks then based on route conditions. We will then send out the route GPX within one week of the ride.
